spring, adjust preload, adjust sag You usually need to change your preload because you’re adding a passenger, carrying a lot of luggage, or have simply put on weight. If you use all your preload adjustments and still can’t get to the desired numbers, then it’s time to use a stronger or weaker spring. Aim for 0.2-0.6 inches (5–15 mm) of static sag at the rear, and 0.8–1.2 inches (20–30 mm) of static sag at the front. In terms of ride height (sag with the rider on the bike) your basic setup should be 1–1.4 inches (25–35 mm) at the rear and 1.2–1.6 inches (30–40 mm) at the front (free sag minus loaded sag). If you don’t have enough sag, decrease your spring preload until you get the desired value. Too much sag? Increase the preload.
